How do you squeeze a four bedroom house into an 18ft caravan? The answer is… you don’t! Truth is, I had never really considered the idea of minimalistic living, but whether we liked it or not we had to make some changes in order to fit into our new lifestyle.
I have never been one to hold on to household items past they’re expiry date. Out with the old and in with the new I say, unlike my husband who thinks we should own three toasters just in case we need spare parts one day! I don’t know how many times I have sent my husband on a tip run only to find items I thought I threw out stashed in our garage! I guess it’s safe to say he has hoarding tendencies. So I knew right from the start that I was going to have to complete our downsizing quest independently, as my husband was a flight risk who could easily jeopardise my mission!
So while my husband was at work I began sifting through our belongings and sorted them into three piles, the keep pile, the charity pile, and the tip pile. I assigned my brother to complete the tip run, I figured this was the safest bet to ensure the items made it to their intended destination.
I encouraged the children to sort through their own belongings (with supervision) explaining that we only have room in the caravan for a few special items each. I found involving the children made the transition to minimalistic living smoother as they chose the items they wanted to keep and were responsible for donating the rest of their belongings to charity.
Before I knew it I had managed to not only de-clutter our house but I had unintentionally de-cluttered our lives! It’s simply astonishing how detaching yourself from unnecessary items in your life can in turn, free you from a possession prison that you didn’t even realise existed. I felt an instant weight lift off my shoulders as I looked around my almost empty house and in a strange way I felt a sense of freedom that I had never experienced before, a rejuvenation of my soul. Unlike my 4 bedroom house, the caravan is very organised and everything has a place and best of all I have dramatically reduced my housework!
